Lighting Set Up

For the camera geeks:

Godox AD200 camera left with softlighter PLM. Godox AD400 camera right with Glow EZ lock. Note: the white diffuser was on for the shot.

I had wanted to do a monochromatic look with Charlie for a while, but I kept hesitating on what color to use. At first, I started with a cream, which looked fine, but I decided that ultimately, he needed something bold to match his bold golden colors and his vibrant attitude. I took a risk with Savage Seamless’ Marmalade, which is the color of a yellow caution sign in traffic, like one of those “pedestrian crossing” or “children at play” signs. But I also felt like it would pick up on his darker golden tones while providing a contrast for his lighter golden tones. And boy, am I glad I chose it! I really love how monochromatic it makes the whole picture look, but also gives such a happy feel to the overall image.

Charlie, ever the people pleaser, is getting pretty great at posing, especially since he knows there are lots of treats involved. As you can see, we even did a few treat catch shots. He was not so great at catching them in the air. I think those will be pretty fun to do in the future too; I love his little expressions when he’s trying to catch them!

I first saw treat shots done by Carrie Southerton:https://www.carriesoutherton.co.uk/ (a dog photographer well worth following, if you love dog photography). She’s based in the UK, but I think she really set the bar high on great treat shots with her Catchathon series:https://www.carriesoutherton.co.uk/catchathon.

So, we’ll be doing this again in the future, and I’ll pull this background out every time I want a happy ray of sunshine in my photography!
